This happens when:
Wellness isn’t varied - we need more than newsletter or fitness challenges. I’m all about wellness but if you tell me that I need to do 100 burpees, politely kick rocks.
Management doesn’t use the wellness resources advertised - If wellness isn’t practiced at the top ranks, it will still exist in lower ranks but it will never be part of the culture…which is the goal.
There are no wellness standards or accountability - no agency is teaching how to do a DUI stop with just a powerpoint. So why is wellness is often a workshop or a great speech given by someone who’s lived through traumatic experiences?
Things have come a long way but what would happen if we applied the same kind of standards to wellness like we do other training areas? Personnel deserves wellness tactics and practice and standards to work towards.

Being a First Responder is a pain in the ass.
No literally - if you’re sitting on your butt for 10-12 hours a day with a loaded tactical vest, it won’t be before long that you’re feeling the warm, numb and achy presence of sciatica.
Sure, it’s annoying, but did you know that chronic pain:
Can lead to thoughts of wanting to die due to intensity of pain - if pain is never ending, one might be looking for a “done” button.
Causes depression due to work and social impact - changing your life to accommodate your pain makes you laugh less and think less of yourself.
And, on a basic level though, it’s difficult to stand at a call for 40 minutes when you have a bulging disc and have a ton of compassion.
